Dear Senator,
I write to urge you to co-sponsor the FRAC Act (S. 587), legislation to repeal the exemption for hydraulic fracturing in the Safe Drinking Water Act and require disclosure of the chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing fluids. It is time to hold the oil and gas production industry to the same standards as any other industry and protect drinking water. This loophole is a relic of the Bush Administration and must be undone to avoid further water pollution issues.
Hydraulic fracturing involves the injection of fluids, often containing toxic chemicals, into oil or gas wells at very high pressure. This practice takes place in 34 states, and many which have already seen the negative effects that hydraulic fracturing can have on water supplies when unregulated.
State regulations for oil and gas production vary widely and federal oversight is needed to make sure that communities and public health are protected. Please join as a cosponsor of the FRAC Act to help make sure that oil and gas production is carried out in a responsible manner.
I look forward to hearing from you,
(please don't forget your name and address!)
